“The Blackeyed Boys” no. 10 in the UK
“Hitchin A Ride 74” hit in the UK, no. 1 in New Zealand and Australia
“So What If I Am” hit in Europe
Phil is the voice of PAPERLACE, his voice is the lead vocal on all the hits and most of the album tracks “Paperlace and Other Bits of Material”
Started his career in 1967 when he joined bass player Cliff Fish in a band called “Music Box” who changed their name to PAPERLACE in 1970 (thought of by Cliff and Phil,) when they auditioned for TV’s ‘Opportunity Knocks’. PAPERLACE won the contest 4 weeks in succession and became the nation’s favourites. A friend of writer Mitch Murray saw them on the show and suggested to Mitch that the song he and lyricist Peter Callender had just written would be ideal for the band.
Management were consulted and in no time Phil and Cliff together with the other two members of the band were in the studio recording the song that was to become their first no. one hit. And the rest as they say is history.
PAPERLACE still tour today, and the band still retains the original rhythm section of Cliff Fish and Phil Wright and Phil’s voice is as clear and strong today as it was on the original recordings.
Phil is now a member of “THE ORIGINAL JUKEBOX HEROES”, still drumming and singing and providing extra percussion for the band.
